Today, we gave our final presentation! WOOHOO!
We had a lot of fun doing this project, but we learned a lot too. I think that social media/networking is still too new to create a concrete bunch of guidelines, but we were certainly headed that direction. Though, in a couple years, who knows facebook may be completely different?
That is why we made a social media guide for The Examiner. We wanted them to have something that they could apply to other platforms besides Facebook. If we would have done this project a few years ago, we may have done a myspace project, and where would that leave us now. That is why it is good not to focus on just one platform. We also included Twitter and Youtube in our guide, in addition to several overall guidelines for any type of website, and how it should interact with people online.
WOOHOO!

this week
We are working on putting together our "social media guide" to give to The Examiner at our final project presentation.
I am paying for a Facebook ad to go up tomorrow for those 25-55, who list Blue Springs or Independence as their hometown, and whose friends are already connected to The Examiner's page. We will see how that goes, and we can add that to our guide as well.
As far as our discussion from Monday, I agree wholeheartedly with changing the convergence program. I think it needs to be better integrated into the rest of the school and newsrooms. There is no direct link from the Futures Lab to each newsroom. Thus, we must come up with our own story ideas and be judged much harder than those in the newsroom. Then, if the story actually turns out, we must take it to the newsrooms, make our own doors there and fight to get it published or aired. That is why this rarely happens. Not because the projects are low quality, but because there is no avenue or system set up to move projects from the lab to the newsroom to publication.
Maybe abolishing the convergence degree is too drastic, but the degree should certainly be changed. I also agree with Juana's suggestions in class that we should learn how to use wordpress or blogsspot instead of dreamweaver in the intro class, as using dreamweaver is very difficult, and probably will not be used again by most students.

THIS WEEK
Hello again,
This week, we have begun our first shot at getting a "Your Take" together via Facebook for publication in The Examiner. "Your Take" is the weekly man-on-the-street question-answer segment. So, we'll see how that goes.
When we get back from break, we are going to make a social media guide for The Examiner. This will include some findings from our research, tips and procedures, as well as points for future growth and development in social media.
Have a good Thanksgiving!

this week
I am still updating our page.
We are still at kind of a standstill. The page continues to grow. We just have not been able to do some of the things that we had wanted to.
1-We finally got a house ad, though I click through the site fairly often, and I have never seen it. It is going out as part of an email to a weekly listserv.
2-Coupon app- Davault has not been able to reach the advertising guy. This is especially frustrating as The Examiner blew us off on a conference call about this very subject.
3-We would also like to do a photo app, but we never received a response via email about that. And, considering that we have had so much trouble getting such easy things done in a timely manner, like a house ad, we have not pressed this for a while. We did send two emails about it though.

this week
This week has been fairly frustrating. Davault scheduled a conference call on Tuesday morning, but somehow some sort of miscommunication occured, and The Examiner folks did not pick up. Finally we were able to talk to them, and we rescheduled for Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the phone was ready (unlike Tuesday), and then no answer again. Some stuff came up out there and we were unable to talk to them again.
Anyways, we are just going to keep on doing what we're doing. We wanted to talk to them about the coupon application, putting up a house ad/fan box, and a Facebook badge.
Anyways, this is just plain difficult. Davault said he would call the advertising guy to discuss the coupon application.

this week
I continued to do our posts, but no comments or likes so that was disappointing.
We scheduled a conference call for 9:30 on Tuesday, so we can try to continue moving forward. The Examiner has not been as helpful as we had hoped. They only just put up a house ad, and we are still waiting on a Facebook badge and to put up a coupon app.
See you tomorrow.

this week
So, I am continuing to update the page. We are still marketing to individuals.
We were supposed to meet on Friday, and neither Davault or Lauren showed up to prepare for the presentation, so we are meeting again tonight.
We are up to about 125 fans, so we are getting to where we need to be fan-wise.
The Examiner still is not running house ads on their site, and they have yet to respond to an email I sent them last week about that and a couple other things.

This week
We finally got The Examiner to change the Facebook link on their website from the old fan page to the new one. That way, maybe the no-longer in use page will stop getting bigger.
BIGGEST WIN OF THE WEEK!- I finally illicited a comment with one of my wall posts. It was awesome, since I have not been able to get someone to write on yet. It was about Grain Valley's flu outbreak.
Next, we are continuing to personally market the page. I am continuing to do our updates.
When we get more fans, we plan to host a columnist discussion. We also hope to see house ads for our fan page on The Examiner's site too.

LAUNCH
So, this was an extremely eventful week. On Wednesday, we launched our new Facebook Fan Page for The Examiner. You can find it by searching "Blue Springs Examiner" or "Independence Examiner."
We have divied up the cities in the coverage area to find groups related to them to market the page to.
I have done our updates so far.
The old page had about 240 fans, and the new one has a little more than 40. We are updating the old site, to tell people to move to the new one. Soon...hopefully we will surpass the old page.
WOOHOO!
Go Tigers!

This Friday
I am a little bit worried that Friday night's Mizzou game vs. Nevada might be a trap game. I know that MU put up 69 on Nevada last year, but it is on the road against a school named after a state. What really has me worried is that the next game comes against Nebraska on a Thursday night.
See Sean Weatherspoon in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "A lot of people out there are not really talking about the Tigers, and Coach (Gary) Pinkel kind of brought that up today," senior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon said. "You've got to go out there and get respect if you want it. So we get the opportunity to go out there on a Thursday and try to take respect and ... "
I don't know...That sounds like looking past an opponent to me.

Week 5
Week 5
We made a few big steps at our meeting today. First, we discovered that you cannot change a FB fan page’s title, only profile pages. Then, we discovered that you must have 1,000 fans to make a vanity URL for the page like facebook.com/examiner.
So, we decided to make a new page altogether. It is not live yet. We kept it unpublished because we want to get the page rockin’ and rollin’ before we put it live. We are currently deciding what applications to add, and figuring out how to get them an RSS feed and a way to get photos on the site.
The new page is titled The Examiner, an Independence & Blue Springs newspaper. We based the new name off of the top keywords searches that led to examiner.net based on Google Analytics. The old site cannot be found in the top 30 searches of “The Examiner” and nothing comes up at all when you search “Independence Examiner” or “Blue Springs Examiner”. This is troublesome since these are the top three keyword searches.
So, this is exciting to make a whole new page. We also discovered that the reason that the thumbnail looks so awful is that it is not a square. We asked the Examiner to make a new square logo for us to use on the FB page.

Week 4
So, I am doing this post just after returning to Columbia from Independence, MO. This morning, the group visited with The Examiner. It was pretty exciting. They are really excited about it all. They were so receptive to our ideas. I am pumped to implement some of our ideas.
We are meeting on Friday to discuss our presentation.

Sorry this post is late. I have had a long week preparing for the first home football game.
We picked a client. The Examiner (www.examiner.net) will be our client. We are planning on visiting their office on Wednesday to meet with the exec. editor, managing editor and new media director. This is the paper I interned at two summers ago, and I already know the people in charge.
Their facebook page, as of right now, has 200 fans or so. There is a lot of room for improvement.

Week 2
This week, we have pursued several media companies in a quest to find our Facebook fan page client. I went after The Examiner in suburban Kansas City. They agreed to do the project. Davault has almost secured KSDK, the NBC affiliate in St. Louis as a client. We will choose KSDK over The Examiner if Davault secures KSDK by Wednesday morning. Otherwise, we will go with The Examiner. Kim found the Jefferson City Magazine to be our client, but he agreed that our alternatives may be better opportunities.
We get access to the Involver software on Tuesday, so we can talk on Wednesday hopefully about who are client is, and what we can provide to them. Looking forward to it.
GO TIGERS!

Post 1
I am very enthused about our capstone project about facebook. I have tried to create a fan page before for a student org and it was pretty much of a failure. I would really like to learn more about social media and marketing.
I chose this project because I plan on going to grad school to get an MBA, focused on marketing.
On Friday, we met with Kim Garretson over phone and Michael Skoler. We are planning on pursuing several media companies, meeting on Wednesday to discuss possibilities, and choosing the correct company for our project.
I am excited about the semester, and this is my first blog post.
